Richard and Karen are the people that make Smooth Transitions a wonderful locally owned and operated company. My 91 year old dad and 87 year old mom decided it was time to let go of their beautiful coastal home of 22 years. Although we were out of their usual jurisdiction(3 hours away on the coast), they worked with us. Helped us find a mover,a storage space in Raleigh.
They most especially helped us with downsizing our space by measuring furniture and giving us a virtual floor plan. They are kind and truly genuine people. The true beauty of their work was revealed when we arrived at our new home exhausted after all the packing to find the new apartment beautifully set up. Pictures on the wall. Beds made. My Skeptical dad was amazed and grateful. Thank you Karen and Richard for helping us make a truly smooth transition in a difficult emotional time!

My friend Margaret and I feel very fortunate to have found Smooth Transitions. They were able to help her make decisions about downsizing from a town home to an independent/ assisted living facility. The team was respectful of her feelings and of how difficult it was for her to have to discard some of her belongings. They helped her decide what to discard and what furniture she could take to use+ in her new place without being over crowded. The move was planned and organized. Everything was packed, unpacked and placed very much as it was in her town home. Smooth Transitions is even disposing of the remaining objects in the town home either with an estate sale, donation charities or taking to trash. They are also broom cleaning and dusting the town home after it is cleaned out. We would not have been able to get all of this done ourselves.

What I liked most about Smooth Transitions is that they provided end-to-end services to transition my mom from her home of nearly 40 years to a senior living center. That was especially important because most of her family members are out of state. They helped her decide to what to take with her and what to leave behind and pack along the way. Move in day and the big reveal at the end of the day was amazing. My mom was really pleased with that outcome and it helped her transition to her new space. Valerie, the Operations VP, was organized and compassionate to my mom-recognizing this was a big change for her. After the move, Smooth Transitions arranged for disposition of the remaining contents (auction, donations, recycle, trash) so that we could have the house ready for sale.

We were a “different” move than what Smooth Transitions is used to, we are a family of 5 that needed help moving from a small apartment into our new home - they helped TREMENDOUSLY the whole way! They packed, unpacked, directed the movers, organized, hung things, and took hauled all the trash and donations away (and that’s just the surface level explanation of what they did for us.)

The experience with Smooth Transitions was "AMAZING". I had to relocate my 90 Year old Parents from the Washington DC metropolitan are to the Raleigh Durham area. Mom and Dad had lived in their home for 53 years. We had to downsize from 3K sq foot home to a 1200 sq foot apartment. The team lead "Karen Wellspeak" took the photos and floor plan from the DC based move out managers and created a living space that reflected the key memories and a personal living space that was phenomenal. After selling our house and down sizing in 2020, we spent the next two years in relative pandemic isolation. Finally we decided this year to embark upon the next phase of our lives. We contacted Smooth Transitions, on a recommendation, to assist us in moving into a senior living community. After speaking with Richard and expressing our desire to move asap, we promptly had an appointment and met with him to begin the process. Subsequently, we met with Valerie and Keely who made us feel like new friends rather than just new clients. The whole team is personable as well as competent and professional. They helped us sort items, packed them for us and kept things organized -- So much so, that even as a visually impaired person, I was able to safely navigate my environment. With the help of their teammate Michael, they had us moved into our new dwelling in a weeks time, not counting the weekend. Aside from rearranging things as we like, we barely had to unpack anything. Not only did their services save us months of difficult, stressful work, it probably gave us a few more years to enjoy this next phase of our lives.

Having just completed a move with a wonderful team of folks at Smooth Transitions, I can honestly say I've never had a better move in my life -- and I have moved at least 35 times in my lifetime. Starting with Richard the owner and president, followed by Stephanie, Karen, Melton, Nelson and Kathleen, this team worked with dedication and purpose and had a total focus on providing the best customer service possible. They planned, executed and completed an entire household move in just over two days -- it was flawless. Honestly we were pleasantly stunned. Talk about a seamless move, (in less than 10 days) with my stepfather currently in cardiac ICU, smooth transitions exceeded expectations.
We first met with Richard, A professional, competent, kind soul, who told us exactly what to expect and was exactly right regarding the four meetings regarding how the move would look , and this assuaged my mom‘s anxiety. Richard, Nelson and Teresa even provided us with a computerized floor plan regarding the new place, where each piece of furniture would be, and got our parents feedback, making sure they were satisfied.
The entire team was tops. They were professional, competent, personable, and listened to my mom.
My mom‘s back was out and she is 84, as was so stressed about the move (having been in the same condo for over 15 years) and all she had to do was sit in a chair and say yes please or no thanks regarding what to take.
My mom could not believe that they literally boxed up everything, but to me, an adult in my early 50s, what was so incredibly exciting was the “unveiling process” on the other end, at the senior assisted living center. Right down to hanging the family photos and putting the Siamese kitty decorations right where they were in the old condo!
The new place felt COZY. It felt warm, they (Nelson and Teresa) gave us a tour, showed us where everything was, there were no surprises, and mom kept saying “this is good this is very good.“
They were so incredibly kind, they gave us a their personal cell phone numbers in case we should have any questions in weeks to come.
Our specific movers the project manager was Nelson and his awesome partner was Teresa. Mom hugged them at the end and said “you guys feel like family.”
They even helped us move the two four-legged Siamese cats into the new place, and were humorous as though they had seen everything. Craig zoom for my mom likes her wine and she had lost the cork when I was driving her to my place for the day mom said oh I don’t wanna throw up my wine and Nelson said you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.
(yes we did put foil on top of the wine bottle that I placed in my car with my mom and two Siamese cats heading to our house for the day as smooth transitions did the entire move) and nobody batted an eye!
To me, that says it all. They HEARD mom. They showed her compassion and patience and constantly reassured.

My only regret is that I did not know about them earlier, as we moved ourselves after 20 years when our son went off to college we so would’ve used them! Five star rating indeed thank you guys so much.

My mom's assisted living facility gave us 3 recommended movers that specialize in senior moves plus some regular movers. We interviewed all and none even came close to the professionalism, competitive pricing, organization and good ole customer service demonstrated by Karen Wellspeak and her team from Smooth Transitions. Karen listened to my mom's desires, concerns and showed real understanding and compassion for a senior in a downsizing mode. She and her team brought packing materials, helped develop a system for identifying what's going and what's not. Karen created a diagram of my mom's new place and had the dimensions of the furniture so she could place the furniture to see what would fit and what would not. No surprises on moving day. Another relief for us was to have their help with selling items that were not getting moved and donating the rest. Karen even gave my mom a mirror she thought would look nice in my mom's new apartment. Smooth Transitions not only packs(or can move things you have packed), they totally unpack and set up the new living space, including unpacking clothes, putting tv and artwork on the wall, kitchen items in place. On the day of the move, at 6:00pm there's a "great reveal" where we were invited to see my mom's new apartment - totally organized, furniture in place where my mom's bed sheets were turned down and toothbrush in place. This franchise is amazing! They moved my father into assisted living and set everything up in his apartment beautifully without even consulting me! The pictures were on the wall, the clothes in the closet and the bed made! They also lowered the estimate to clean out my parents' house based on what I and my sister had accomplished. They pack up the things you want to keep, move them to the new place and set up all the furniture, hang the pictures and even make the bed! Then they take the rest of the furniture and belongings and ship them to family members who want those items, prepare things for auction and donate the rest as appropriate. When they are done, the house is absolutely ready to put on the market. We have been thrilled with all of their work and support. I highly recommend them.

I recently used Smooth Transitions when moving to another state. I had almost 1/2 of house and an entire garage full of stuff that I wasn't going to take. The day after the movers were loaded and I flew out, the Smooth Transitions Team went in and had everything cleaned out prior to closing. l don't even know where to start to say how impressed we were with this company and its employees. Richard, the owner, was our first contact and he reviewed the whole process with us in great detail. Next, Stephanie and Teresa came and started packing,
Finally moving day arrived. My aunt's belongings were at her old apartment at 8:30 am and on that same day, by 3:30 pm, we were greeted with a "reveal" at her new apartment. Stephanie met us and showed us her finished project. My aunt's pictures were hung, her bed was made and even her bathroom supplies were placed in the drawers exactly as they had been at the previous apartment.
Smooth Transitions was the best choice for our move and we have already referred several people and it's only been a week since our move.
Of special note was our interaction with Stephanie. Although everyone we encountered was just wonderful, Stephanie deserves a special mention. She worked so hard (and so fast) and all along the way she was in contact with me, asking questions and advising us of her progress. She was thoughtful and kind and if you look up the word efficient in any dictionary, you'll probably find her picture. Her insight into our needs and the needs of our aunt, were incredible.
My only regret is that I'm limited to only five stars. If I could, my review would include about a million!

I had tears well up when I walked into my mom's new apartment with her. I wanted to hug Stephanie but with Covid I couldn't. It was set up beautifully. Stephanie was the project manager and was so professional, kind, compassionate, helpful, respectful and has great integrity. She was also very flexible with changes to our move that were pretty major, but she just figured out a new layout based on the new apartment we were assigned and rolled effortlessly with us. She organized her team so efficiently on move in day and had the place ready for the big reveal a couple hours earlier than expected....The people at the apartment complex were amazed at how efficient they were and couldn't believe how it was all set up with pictures hung and flowers on the counter. Keeley was also a big help in the packing and unpacking and she was also very sweet and respectful. They both took the time to ask mom if she wanted to look at pictures before they packed them which was a great touch. They helped us take stuff back to our car or unload our car.....whatever we needed they offered to help. I would highly recommend this company for moving your elderly family or for yourself if you are looking to downsize.
SECOCOND REVIEW...background. mom was supposed to move into assisted living in July but due to Covod the final Medicare inspections and certifications were delayed. We had already given notice and had her place mostly packed so The Reserve provided an independent living apartment for her. We used Smooth Transitions for the first move as indicated in the above review.
Well we were finally able to move my mom into assisted living....it took an additional 2.5 months for The Reserve to get all the certifications. Smooth Transitions said they would be available to mom again when her AL room was ready and they did. It was very dynamic and we got daily updates from The Reserve, but we could only guess at move in dates. Smooth Transitions was flexible and had to juggle several moves that week and they did it effortlessly. Mom had a hard time adjusting to the last move so we tried to make this second move as seemless as possible. We took her to the beach for several days and Richard and Stephanie provided resources so the team was able to pack and move mom in one day. They are remarkable and strive to make each move as smooth as possible. They tailor each move to each client so they can meet specific needs. They have compassion and are so organized and are just amazing. If you are downsizing yourself or a family member I would highly recommend this company. I cant say enough about them.

I understand fully well the anxiety that can come with this giant life transition. Richard and Karen made us feel like all would be taken care of from beginning to end. My parents are now in their new home and even though my father suffers from no cognitive issues, I'm not sure he even knows his recliner, side table and TV are in a new location. :) It's like they picked up their entire living situation (pictures, furniture, loved items) and just positioned them somewhere where my parents are just a little safer and taken care of.

We found out about Smooth Transitions from friends at our church. I didn't quite know what to expect but have been so pleased with the work that Karen and her group Keelie, Stephanie, Nelson and Lawana have done. They packed all of our things and had movers bring the furniture and boxes. Then they set up our house while we were out for the day. I could not have made the move without their help. They are friendly and caring about doing an excellent job of packing to avoid anything breaking. I would highly recommend them to seniors who need help with a move.

I met with Richard Miller and he thoroughly explained my options and introduced me to Stephanie Ozinga, my Move Project Manager. She was professional, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. In fact, in retrospect I wish I had done more with her to go through more of my possessions to help me determine what to keep, to give away, to donate, to sell, or scrap! A wonderful part of the service was the creation of an interactive floor plan from my actual floor plan, incorporating my actual furniture. It was a great help. And the best part was her managing the actual move.

Moving from my home for the past 27 years to a 55+ community apartment was a daunting task. I hired Smooth Transitions after being introduced to them at a lunch and learn. Their priorities were first me,my belongings second. Karen, Keely and Stephanie helped me make decisions concerning “does it stay?” or “does it go to the apartment?”. Their downsizing experience and knowledge was invaluable. There were one to three packers packing all items to go at the same time decisions were being made. On move day the movers moved all my belongings and the team unpacked and placed everything in it’s place. All I had to do was arrive for the big “reveal”. My new home looked as if interior designers had created the finished product. My art was hung and my TVs mounted to the wall. Richard and his staff were an amazing help to me and I could not have accomplished on my own what they did for me. Our senior move manager, Karen Wellspeak, coordinated the project from inventory to floor planning our furniture making insightful suggestions as to what to keep or find a new home. She was always mindful of our limitations and patient. She had a wealth of ideas and opportunities. Sorting items and packing with care and purpose made our smooth transition possible
The “Reveal” for our new home with stunning. Furniture was well arranged and welcoming. Pictures are hung artfully artistically with awareness of our preference sensed subtly by the team. As we made a significant downsizing and given limited space available, dinnerware, pots, pans, serving pieces, clothes, electronics were thoughtfully placed in the new home. Service did not quit then. A few small imperfections were quickly fixed. They followed through on cleanup of the old home and arranged for transport of remaining furniture and boxes to family in another state and helped rearrange a few pictures four months after the Reveal.

We have moved 18 times and using Smooth Transitions was by far the easiest. They took care of everything: packing, moving and unpacking. They took pictures and measured the rooms and our furniture and made a computer model so that they knew where everything went. They even set up our computers and internet and hung pictures.

Smooth Transitions completely and positively altered the experience of our home move! The team was kind and supportive and also unbelievably hard working and efficient. On the day after the moving trucks departed, they unpacked and fully arranged our kitchen and living room which allowed us to function in that space immediately. One of my favorite things was that they hung pictures on the wall, so it felt like home on Day 1. On the back-end, they fully managed the dispersal of unwanted items in our old home sparing us several days of work, stress and the inevitable feeling that “it will never end”. It is hard to put a price on the value and help that Smooth Transitions brought to this process. However, the service was significantly more affordable than I could have imagined, particularly given the scope of support and service they provide. They saved us so much time and energy that we were able to go back to our jobs and function normally earlier than we planned. This was one of the absolute best decisions we ever made and we highly recommend their services to anyone preparing for a move.
We recently sold our home of 36 years and moved into a condo about 40% smaller. Opting to follow the advice of professionals we decided to hire a company to assist in our move. Smooth Transitions was recommended to us and we contacted the franchise owner to determine the extent of their services and their pricing structure. We were able to determine the cost was at least comparable to other companies and the level of service was extraordinary. They handled all packing (except what we chose to do ourselves - which probably made their task more difficult).
They drove to our new condo, took multiple photos, staged where our furniture should go, took pictures of cabinets, closets, drawers, etc. to determine where we routinely kept most basic items and did their best to replicate in the new abode. They arranged for moving, disposal of all items we were leaving behind, attempted to sell some things, donated others to non-profits, and carried the rest to the recycling center or dump. They disposed of all our hazardous materials as well.
On moving day, they insisted we NOT be there, moved everything, placed it in the agreed locations, hung all our pictures, mirrors etc., installed wall brackets for our televisions, connected all the cables and much more. When they revealed all they had done, we were able to move in, cook, sleep in our own bed. This was one of the absolute best decisions we ever made and we highly recommend their services to anyone preparing for a move.

Bob and I recently were faced with an unexpectedly decision regarding my stepfather. He had been living in an independent apartment facility. Without any notice he ended up in the intensive care unit at a hospital and was to be released to a nursing home/assisted care facility. Having just recently returned to Raleigh after 40 years away we had no idea where to turn to make this happen. We found a facility that would take him but how were we going to move some of his furnishings, and personal items. Someone at the assisted care facility mentions three names. Shortly after we called Smooth Transitions, Richard Miller returned the call. That afternoon, he met with us at the apartment, described the procedure and plans for making the move. Also he showed us how to mark items going to the assisted care room, a few items to our garage, and the remaining clothes, furnishings,and various items he would take to a local charity..
From the minute we met Richard, we felt at ease. He was one of those most warm and understanding gentleman, I have known. He was full of compassion and empathetic of what we were going through. He assured us that everything would be taken care of to and to our amazement this was true.
Within two days later, his crew with supervision of Karen and the team, the clothes and household items were packed and moved and placed in appropriate places and to look as as close as in his previous apartment. His World War II medals and citations were arranged on the bookshelves exactly as they had been previously been displayed in the apartment, the same with the bathroom items. Pictures were hung most attractively . The room looked pretty as much as he had known it. They even located a stamp collection we did not know existed. It was a wonderful surprise. Everything to be moved was and not one thing lost or damaged and looking the best. The garage delivery was accomplished as well as those items to charitable facilities. The whole team went out of their way to make it a perfect move and it was. It was FABULOUS and at a respectable cost.
We honestly felt like Richard and his team were a part of the family and would do anything they could to make this unexpected move as easy as possible and they did! I know when our move occurs in the future, they will do it.
